Descaling a Shower Head

Problem Solver

Dealing with scale

In severe hard water areas, a shower head may need descaling every fortnight. This means dismantling and scraping it down, or soaking it in scale remover — both tedious tasks.

Another, better way of tackling the problem is to fit a water softener/conditioner. Two types come as small compact units which are easily plumbed into the supply pipe:

Electro-magnetic conditioners work by changing the magnetic attraction of mineral particles in the water so that they stay there, instead of forming scale.

Chemical dosing softeners work by releasing carefully measured doses of non-toxic chemicals into the water to soften it.
