Family Health: Ankle Injuries and How to Prevent Them

The ankle is the joint that most often suffers from sprains. The injury can be caused by twisting the foot as you walk or run, or by jumping from a high place. It causes pain and swelling in the joint. For treatment, see Sprains and strains.

A serious sprain can be very difficult to distinguish from a broken bone. So if there is any doubt, and the injured person cannot support himself on the ankle, assume that a bone has been broken and take him in a car to the Accident and Emergency Department of your local hospital or call an ambulance.
