How to Stop Indigestion
Indigestion is usually caused by eating too much rich, fried or fatty foods, or by drinking too much alcohol. Symptoms include burping, hiccups, discomfort in the stomach, a hot sensation behind the breastbone, flatulence and nausea.
What you can do
• Take half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water, or antacid tablets or mixtures which can be bought from a chemist.
• Rest in an easy chair.
• Drink small amounts of non-alcoholic fluids.
• For more lasting relief stop smoking (which increases stomach acid) and eat smaller amounts more often and more slowly. Cut down on alcohol, spicy and fatty foods, dairy products, beans, onions and seasonings such as black pepper, vinegar and garlic.
