How to Treat a Black Eye

A blow to the eye socket causes internal bleeding which turns the skin dark blue or black and produces a swelling.

• Put a cold compress over the eye to limit the swelling and relieve the pain.

• Cool the eye for at least 30 minutes, replacing the compress if it becomes warm.

• Go to a doctor as soon as possible to check that there is no serious damage to the eye or a fracture of the skull. A blow which is violent enough to blacken the eye may cause either.

DO NOT put raw steak on a black eye; it is ineffective and just wastes expensive meat.
