Vodka Cocktails

The simplest addition to vodka is a few ice cubes, which chill and dilute it as they melt.

While vodka is rarely mixed with other ingredients in its countries of origin, the cocktail was the primary vector for its consumption in the rest of the world. Orange juice (it is said that its use became popular during American Prohibition as a way of disguising the bad taste of bootlegged alcohol), tomato juice, and many other beverages — some alcoholic, some not — gradually became associated with vodka thanks to imaginative bartenders.

These flavoured, aromatic drinks do nothing to bring out the specific qualities of vodka. The aromas of the most sophisticated vodkas are overwhelmed by the other ingredients, which explains why the vodkas used in these mixed drinks are usually the most neutral and the least expensive to make. Their role is simply to add alcohol to the drink, and they can be mixed with almost any other ingredient, including more flavourful spirits like rum and whiskey.

But there are also fashions in cocktails, and today, a vodka cocktail evokes for many consumers a promise of exoticism.
